Berry Fun

They were finally ripe - the berries we had been waiting for. It was now time! This Saturday we went berry picking. Raspberry jam is one of the important staples around our home in the winter time (according to all the kids!) So our morning was spend in the raspberry field.

The little ones helped.
The big ones helped (my sweet hubby picked LOTS)

And all the ones in between helped
We ended up with several boxes of these:
Which soon ended up looking like this:

That was cooked down (MMM smells good):
And ladled into jars:
Oops, shoulda worn an apron!! And the final product - 45 pints of yummy jam.
Saturday was a busy day but it feels so good to know that those jars are waiting to be opened this winter - ready to spread summer berries on warm biscuits and scones.

This looks so good! I love getting my jelly and jam ready for the year ahead. I had a not so great jelly making time tonight. I was experimenting on making Oregon grape jelly, We picked washed cleaned and prepared our juice. Then I added my sugar and pectin and started to cook away. I could see little lines in it and upon a closer look I had maggets in my jelly. I checked my pectin box and it had expired in 2004. I am thinking that this may be what the problem was? I hated the waste of all the sugar! I have never had this happen before but will take note to check on all these things the next time around!
Back to needing to get some other berries! I am glad I noticed this! I hope you bring some jelly and biscuits to school this year to share...no pressure though! Maybe you bring the jelly and I will bake the biscuits...that sounds more fair!

Oh Ross,
What a huge disappointment with your jelly. I think that would make me cry!! (Although, that is easy for me to do lately - for some reason :0)) Did you pick raspberries at your brothers yet? I hope you get lots to make up for this loss!! I for sure will bring jelly and biscuits to school!!!
Blessings,
